A word on the Piece
The Maurerische Trauermusik (Masonic Funeral Music), for orchestra, in C minor, KV 477 was a piece composed by Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART in 1785 "on the death of brothers Mecklenburg and Esterházy", as Mozart noted in the inventory of his compositions. Duke Georg August of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Count Franz Esterházy von Galántha, members of the Viennese aristocracy, were Masons whose joint memorial service took place on November 17, 1785. (Mozart also belonged to the Freemasonry.) The instrumental version of the Maurerische Trauermusik received its premiere later in a concert on December 9, 1785.The Maurerische Trauermusik illustrates the "quasi-religious underpinnings of the masonic movement expressed through the music’s majestic solemnity."[Source of this extract: Wikipedia]
